Reclaiming Friday the 13th: A Celebration of the Divine Feminine 🌙

Friday the 13th, and the number 13 in general, carries the ominous reputation of “bad luck” —a day to tread lightly—a floor to be avoided in elevators. But peel back the layers of patriarchal fear and superstition, and you’ll discover that this day is actually a powerful portal for honoring the Divine Feminine, intuition, and ancient goddess wisdom.

The Forgotten Origins

Long before superstition (and propaganda) turned it into something spooky, Friday the 13th was considered sacred.

Friday is named after the Norse goddess Freyja (or Freya)—the goddess of love, fertility, beauty, and magic. Freya was deeply connected to cycles, sexuality, intuition, and independence. She rode into battle with warriors and was honored as a wise, sensual protector of life and death. Her day—Friday—was once a day for celebrating feminine power and abundance.

And the number 13? Far from unlucky, it was once revered as the number of the Goddess. There are 13 lunar cycles each year, mirroring the menstrual cycles of most women. The number was sacred in matriarchal and earth-based traditions, symbolizing harmony with nature, transformation, and rebirth.

So why did Friday the 13th become “unlucky”?

A Threat to Power

Like many things rooted in feminine energy, Friday the 13th was intentionally maligned. As patriarchal systems took hold and organized religion rose to power, anything that celebrated feminine autonomy, cyclical living, or goddess worship was suppressed—or demonized.

Some trace this superstition to events like the mass arrest of the Knights Templar on Friday the 13th in 1307, or earlier still, to the systematic erasure of pagan practices and midwifery traditions.

What we’re left with today is a cultural narrative that’s forgotten its roots—and an opportunity to reclaim them.

Reclaiming the Magic

Friday the 13th is not a day to fear—it’s a day to honor your intuition, deepen your rituals, and reconnect to the powerful feminine forces within you (regardless of gender). It’s a moment to slow down, listen, and align.

Some ideas to mark this sacred day:

  • Light a candle and set intentions under the energy of the moon

  • Connect to your body through gentle movement, dance, or rest

  • Journal on what feminine energy means to you

  • Practice gratitude for the ways you're reclaiming your worth and intuition

  • Gather in circle with friends or loved ones to share and reflect

A New Way Forward

Every time we choose to reclaim old wisdom, we weave a new narrative into the collective field. We remind ourselves that our softness is strength, our intuition is intelligence, and our cycles are sacred.

This Friday the 13th, may we all remember:
✨ You are not too much.
✨ You are not broken.
✨ You are not unlucky.
✨ You are part of something ancient, powerful, and divine.
